Deanna’s Story

Before I was introduced to Dave Ramsey I thought I was good with money management. Needless to say, Dave taught me to “fine tune” my spending habits. I sold a piece of property and focused on my financial goals. As a result, I paid off $50,000 of debt in eighteen months!

Yes, my family thought I had lost my mind or joined a cult!

After becoming debt-free, I saved all the money I was using to pay off debt. Thank heavens I did, because I found out at the end of the year I that I owed the IRS as a result of selling the property. But I did not even have to worry about where I was going to get the money. I had the money saved and was able to pay the debt I owed.

Dave Ramsey points out the fact that the borrower is a slave to the lender. The borrower is also a slave to the employer. I was afraid to leave my undesirable employment when I had monthly payments. After becoming debt-free, I had the opportunity to change my career and share my experience with others. Being debt-free has given me a much-desired feeling of peace.

I sincerely thank you for the opportunity to share my counseling success story with you. In 2004 I was recently divorced, a single parent, and had a low paying job. I didn’t make enough money and usually had a negative balance in my checking account because money was so tight.

I had accumulated over $17,000 in debt from the divorce itself and the after math. This might not seem like a lot to some but it was a mountain to me and I was considering filing bankruptcy. I cried out to the Lord because I knew in my heart that bankruptcy was not what I was suppose to do.

A few days later a friend told me about Dave’s course, I did some research and found a class. In the class a lady told me about Deanna Ooley, who is a Dave Ramsey certified counselor . After I finished the class I decided to call Deanna and meet with her to help me put my plan into action. I had already saved up my $500.00 but I needed help on walking out this debt free lifestyle.

Deanna helped me put a plan together and walked me through the rough patches of unexpected financial events. I managed to get my debt down 17K to less than 10K in a two year period, now you have to understand that I was only averaging 16K a year for that time period. It was a very hard time in my life, but with the Lord and Deanna on my side I was able to make leaps and bounds in my goal of being debt free.

In late 06, I was laid off of my job and was unemployed for 10 months, by this time my debt was down to 4K. I can’t tell you what a relief it was to be able to pay all my bills on my unemployment. Had I still owed $17,000 I would of never made it. I now working for a great company, making great money.

I recently purchased a new home and am still working on walking out my debt free life. I am so thankful that the Lord allowed Deanna in my life to counsel me, encourage me, and just listen to me. She was the hands and voice of the Lord on many occasions. She helped me to keep putting one foot in front of another. I encourage those who are struggling and feel overwhelmed by debt right now, keep walking this plan out. It will truly set you free from the bondage and burden of debt.

I am well on my pathway to becoming debt free. I was in a lot of trouble and didn’t really understand the gravity of the situation I was in, but I knew I needed help, and didn’t know where to turn. I was practicing therapy for my depression one day at my mom’s apartment and simply just asked God to show me some kind of message for what I needed to do.

I saw Dave Ramsey on TV giving advice about money plus talking about his book, “The Total Money Makeover”, and how simple it seemed. I thought that sounds exactly like something I could use because it was not about using fancy forms and making things scientific and complicated but just changing attitude which I was already working on. I bought the book, started reading and was still feeling scared about all of my debt trouble so I called a number to reach a Financial Coach and I was referred to Deanna Ooley.

I knew that Dave Ramsey didn’t accept credit cards, but I still brought my debit card, cash, and a check because I didn’t know which form of payment would be the easiest to use. To my surprise Deanna didn’t even use a credit/debit card machine period for just debit cards. At first it seemed really hard to change my ways of spending, but Deanna is there for me every step of the way if I need to ask questions with total support and I absolutely love her for that.

I have paid the smallest debts so far and I’m learning to work with the creditors at a steady even pace as well as managing my money very efficiently. I am also trying to sell my motorcycle which would eliminate half my debt, paying minimum payments to collections that I’m talking to, keeping the ones not talking to me in the back for now and paying the next smallest debt I owe to get it paid so I can move on.

The more I get things organized the easier it gets and the less stressed I feel. I have also started working overtime at my job and doing other jobs on the side to earn extra money to help me pay my debts quicker.
